Upscale a clip

Make a low-resolution or soft clip sharper and bigger with the AI upscale pass — what size comes back, which sources it takes, how it is priced, and what happens to your original.

Updated October 2026

Upscale makes the same footage sharper and bigger, up to 4K. It is an AI pass that runs on our servers, so it needs a Cloud project, a sign-in and credits. This is the Mac and Windows app; the phone has it in the clip’s menu too.

Start an upscale

Right-click a video clip, open AI passes, and choose Upscale to 4K…. It is in the menu’s REPLACES THE SOURCE group. The sheet shows the price before anything is spent; nothing is charged until you choose to run it, and each run is one attempt.

What size comes back

A clip comes back at most four times its size, so what you get depends on the source:

  • Most sources reach 4K. A source whose shorter side is 540 pixels or more comes back at 4K, the same length.
  • A small source stops short of 4K. Between 271 and 539 pixels, it comes back four times its size — the menu names it Upscale ×4, and the sheet says the size you will get.
  • A tiny source is refused. At 270 pixels or less, four times is still too small, and the menu row says so.
  • A source already at 4K. It has nothing to upscale, and the row says that too.

Upscale takes sources up to five minutes long.

What it costs

It is priced per second of the clip’s source at the 4K rate, and a source above 30 frames per second costs twice as much. See what generation costs.

What happens to your original

The sharper version replaces the source on every clip cut from it, so the whole timeline uses it at once. Your original is not lost: it stays as a take. Right-click a clip and choose Review takes… to compare them; Make keeper puts the original back on that clip, free, and ⌘Z undoes it.
