Use markers and chapters

Drop markers on the timeline, label and colour them, turn a marker into a region, and make chapters for YouTube and for one file per chapter.

Updated October 2026

Markers are manual editing, so they are free and work offline in any project. This is the Mac and Windows app.

Drop a marker

Park the playhead and press M (Add · remove marker). The same key on the same spot removes it. You can also open the command palette (⌘K) and choose Add marker at playhead. Markers belong to the whole timeline, not to one clip, and sit on the ruler.

Edit a marker

Click a marker to move the playhead to it. Double-click it to open EDIT MARKER, where you can:

  • type a label,
  • choose its TYPE: Note, Chapter or To-do,
  • pick a COLOUR,
  • turn it into a region with Make a region to the playhead (or drag the marker sideways), and Clear it back to a single point,
  • or choose Delete marker.

Choose Done when you finish.

Jump between markers

Open the command palette (⌘K): your markers are listed there by label, and choosing one moves the playhead to it.

Chapters

Set a marker’s type to Chapter to make it a chapter. In the export window, CHAPTERS lists your chapters in the form YouTube reads, with a Copy button. The list needs at least three chapters, each at least ten seconds long, and starts at 0:00 (an Intro chapter is added if yours does not). If your chapters are regions, you can also export One file per chapter.

Every marker, chapter or not, is also kept in the OTIO timeline file the export can include, with its colour.
