Relink missing footage

When a project's footage has moved or a drive is unplugged, point Horoptic at the file again, check it is the same footage, and find the rest in a folder.

Updated October 2026

This is the Mac and Windows app. Relinking is free and works offline.

When footage is missing

If a file a clip uses has moved, been renamed or sits on a drive that is not connected, the preview says the clip’s footage is missing from this device and offers Relink to a file…. The same choice is in the clip’s right-click menu and on the footage row in the Library.

  1. Choose Relink to a file… and pick the file.
  2. Horoptic compares it with what it recorded about the original — RECORDED beside THIS FILE: name, kind, length, picture size, frame rate, codec, size and date — and marks what differs.
  3. Choose Relink to use it. Clips keep their in and out points. Or choose Choose another file….

Horoptic refuses a file of the wrong kind, a file too short for the clips that use it, or one it cannot read, and says that nothing was changed.

Find the rest in a folder

After a relink, if other footage is still missing, the message offers Look in a folder…. Pick the folder and Horoptic relinks each file whose name, kind, length, picture size and frame rate all match what it recorded; anything less certain is listed for you to check and relink yourself.

A ProRes, DNxHR or MXF file is converted to an H.264 copy first, as on import, and the copy takes the clip’s place.
