Key out a green screen

Remove a green or blue background with Chroma key, tune its edges, and let AI lift a subject off any background first.

Updated October 2026

This is the Mac and Windows app. Keying is manual editing, so it is free, works offline, and shows in the preview and the export alike.

Key a clip

  1. Put the green-screen clip on a track above the background you want to show through. Keying a clip on the bottom track has nothing beneath it to reveal, so neither the preview nor the export applies it.
  2. Select the clip, open the Effects tab in the Inspector and choose + Effect. In the shelf, under ALPHA CUTS, choose Chroma key.
  3. Set Key color to your background. It starts at pure green.
  4. Tune the edges: Similarity sets how close to the key colour a pixel must be to disappear, Blend softens the edge, and Despill takes the green tint off hair and skin near the edge.

No green screen? Remove the background first

Right-click a video clip and choose Remove the background… under AI passes. It puts your subject on green, and then you key it out as above. This is an AI pass that runs on our servers: it needs a Cloud project and a sign-in, it is priced in credits by the clip’s frame size and length, and you see the price before anything is spent. The result replaces the source’s footage in every clip cut from it; the original stays in Review takes….

⌘Z undoes any change.
