Compound clips and adjustment clips

Fold several clips into one compound clip you can open, edit and reuse, and put an adjustment clip over a stretch of the timeline to grade or affect everything beneath it.

Updated October 2026

Both are manual editing, so they are free and work offline in any project. This is the Mac and Windows app.

Make a compound clip

Select the clips to fold together, right-click one and choose Make compound clip. They become a single clip on the timeline that you can move, trim and grade as one. If the selection cannot fold — for example, it would cut through a transition or leave out part of a linked clip — the menu row says why.

Edit inside it

Right-click the compound and choose Open compound clip. Its own timeline opens, and a bar across the top shows where you are; use its back button, or Main timeline, to come out again. If the same compound is used in more than one place, the bar says so: an edit inside changes every use.

To change one use on its own, choose Make a separate compound first. To undo the fold, choose Break apart, which puts the clips back on their tracks.

Add an adjustment clip

An adjustment clip has no picture of its own: it changes every visible video track beneath it, over its length. Select the clips it should cover, right-click and choose Add adjustment clip above; it lands on the first empty video track above them. Or right-click a video track’s header and choose Insert adjustment clip to put one at the playhead.

Select it, and the Inspector shows the settings it carries — the Color and Effects tabs, plus Opacity: half the opacity is half the adjustment. An adjustment clip cannot sit on the bottom track (there is only black beneath it), inside a compound clip, or take a transition; fade it in or out instead.

⌘Z undoes any of these.
