Where your projects live, and how to back them up

Where Horoptic keeps a Local project on your computer, how to back it up or move it with a .horoptic package, and what uninstalling leaves behind.

Updated October 2026

A Local project — one you edit without an account — exists only on the computer you made it on. Its edit and a copy of every file you imported live inside Horoptic’s own data folder, not as files you can see in Finder or File Explorer:

  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Horoptic
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Horoptic

Don’t move, edit or delete anything in that folder by hand: the projects inside it are a database, not a set of files, and the folder holds your only copy. To keep a copy somewhere else, make a package.

See what you have

In the desktop app, open Settings (⌘, on a Mac, Ctrl+, on Windows) and choose Storage. It lists every Local project on this computer with the room each one takes, largest first, and how much Horoptic is using in all. Each project’s menu there has Open (Open read-only on a project marked KEPT COPY) and Save as package…. To delete a project, use its card on the start screen.

Back up or move a project

A .horoptic package is one file that carries a Local project: its edit and a whole copy of every media file it uses. It does not carry the undo history.

  1. On the start screen, open the project card’s menu and choose Save as package… — or, with the project open, choose File › Save as Package… from the menu bar.
  2. Pick where to save it. Copy the file anywhere you keep backups: an external drive, a NAS, a cloud folder.
  3. To open it — on this computer or another one — choose Open package… on the start screen, or File › Open Package…, or drop the file onto the start screen. Opening a package makes a new project and never changes the one you saved it from.

Back up every project at once

Choose File › Back Up All Projects…, or Back up all projects… in Settings › Storage, and pick a folder. Horoptic saves one .horoptic package per Local project into it, one after another. Before you start, it tells you the total size, any project that is missing footage (it is saved without it) and any project it has to skip. If the drive shows less free space than the packages need, it won’t start; choose another folder. A package never replaces a file already in the folder — it takes the next free name, like My Edit (2).horoptic.

Keep Horoptic open until it’s done. Cancel keeps every package already finished.

A Cloud project doesn’t need this: it syncs to your account, so you open it on another computer by signing in there.

Uninstalling

Uninstalling Horoptic removes the app and leaves its data folder in place, on both the Mac and Windows — so your Local projects are still there if you reinstall. To remove them too, save any you want to keep as packages first, then delete the folder above.
